A Few Things About Me

First, let me welcome you to “Write Your Own Wellness Story.”

My name is Meg Root. I’ve been a health and wellness professional for over 25 years and earned my B.A. in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) as both an Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist and a Group Exercise Instructor. I am also certified through STOTT Pilates as a mat and reformer instructor.

That’s not the most important stuff about me, but I just wanted you to know that I have a few credentials to help you along in your wellness journey.  Here’s what I’m really about:

While many people in my profession teach or train at a studio or gym, my career took a unique twist early on when I became full time instructor at Rancho La Puerta, the world’s first destination fitness resort and spa located in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. I knew the first morning I hiked the mountain at 6am with a group of guests, this was the path (literally and figuratively), I was supposed to be on.

My husband and I spent nearly eight years at RLP,  “living the life of fitness,” as we used to call it–hiking the mountain each morning, teaching fitness classes and eating organic food prepared for us out of the garden each day. We returned to the “real world” in 1993 and went on to work for a number of premier resorts across the country including Meadowood Napa Valley, Miraval, The Spa at Sea Island, and now Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa in Corona, CA.

Our time at the Ranch was the inspiration for both our personal and professional philosophies. In many ways, life was simple there–and that resonated with us. We ate (high quality, nutritious food–mostly vegetarian), we breathed (yoga, meditation, soaking up the beautiful natural surroundings), and we moved (besides teaching, walking from place to place was our only method of transportation). We also enjoyed strong relationships with the wonderful Ranch community surrounding us.

Our life is different these days. Not quite so simple. With two boys, Jimmy (13) and Chris (9), two cars, two cats, a mortgage, and no chef to prepare three organic meals for us each day–we are challenged, like most people, to find balance in the day to day craziness of family life.

But you don’t live somewhere amazing for eight years without some sort of take away. When I get overwhelmed, I simply return to what I know well: eat, breathe, move–connect. It really is that simple.

And it’s that simple, doable message that I want to share with you through Write Your Own Wellness Story. Give it a try. You can easily make it your own, and I think you will find that it makes for a life that is vibrant, rich and well worth living.

Be Well,

Meg Root
